Intermittent Explosive Disorder

When outbursts feel out of your control.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) involves repeated, sudden episodes of aggressive or angry outbursts that are out of proportion to the situation. Afterwards many people feel regret or embarrassment. We provide IED evaluation and treatment in Chicago and by telehealth across Illinois, without judgment.

What care includes

  • A careful evaluation: We separate IED from other conditions that can cause outbursts, such as mood disorders, ADHD or trauma.
  • Cognitive behavioral strategies: You learn to spot early warning signs and interrupt the cycle before it peaks.
  • Medication management: When appropriate, medication can lower the intensity and frequency of episodes.
  • Support for families: With your permission we help the people around you understand the condition and the plan.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • Sudden outbursts of yelling, threats or breaking things
  • Reactions that feel far bigger than what set them off
  • Feeling relief during an episode, then regret or shame afterwards
  • Outbursts that have hurt relationships, jobs or legal standing

Outbursts are a symptom, not a character flaw. With treatment, most people gain real control.
