Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Calmer homes and stronger parent and child relationships.

Every child pushes back sometimes. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a lasting pattern of angry or irritable mood, arguing and defiance that strains family life and school. We evaluate and treat ODD in children and teens in Chicago, working closely with parents.

How we help families

  • Thorough assessment: We look for conditions that often come with ODD, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression or learning difficulties.
  • Parent support and training: Practical, consistent strategies that reduce power struggles at home.
  • Skills for your child: Help with frustration, problem solving and expressing feelings in healthier ways.
  • School coordination: With your consent we share recommendations with teachers and counselors.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • Frequent temper outbursts and arguing with adults
  • Refusing rules or requests as a regular pattern, not an occasional bad day
  • Deliberately annoying others or blaming others for mistakes
  • Family routines and school reports that keep getting harder

Children with ODD are not bad kids. With the right support, families can break the cycle and reconnect.
